Compression Garments After Liposuction in London: How Long Should You Wear Them?
A practical guide to compression garments after liposuction — how many weeks to wear them, what to buy, and how to stay comfortable.

Almost every patient asks about the garment before they ask about the surgery itself. It is the single most constant part of liposuction recovery in London, so it pays to understand what it does and how long you will be wearing it.
What Compression Garments Actually Do
After surgery the treated area contains fluid-filled spaces where fat used to be. Compression:
- Reduces swelling and bruising
- Helps the skin retract evenly onto the new contour
- Lowers the risk of seroma (fluid collection)
- Supports the tissues, which reduces pain and improves comfort when moving
Skipping compression is the most common self-inflicted cause of a lumpy result.
The Typical Timeline
Weeks 1–2 — 24 hours a day. Remove only to shower. Expect leakage from incisions in the first 48 hours; use absorbent pads.
Weeks 3–4 — 20–23 hours a day. Most patients switch to a second-stage, lighter garment as swelling reduces.
Weeks 5–6 — 12 hours a day. Daytime wear only for most people.
Weeks 7–8 and beyond. Optional. Some patients continue during exercise or long days for extra comfort. Larger treatment areas and 360 procedures often need the full eight weeks.
Your surgeon may adjust this. Always follow your personal aftercare plan over any generic timeline.
Choosing the Right Garment
- Fit, not squeeze. It should feel firm and supportive, never painful or numbing.
- Buy two. One to wear while the other is washed.
- Seamless panels over the treated area reduce indentation marks.
- Correct size. Sizing down does not speed recovery — it restricts circulation and can cause creasing.
- Wash cool, air dry to preserve elasticity.
Common Problems and Fixes
- Rolling or bunching: the garment is too small or the wrong style; switch to a full-body or zip-front design.
- Skin irritation: wear a thin cotton layer underneath.
- Indentations: smooth foam pads or lipo boards under the garment prevent them.
- Heat and itching: cool showers, breathable fabric and loose outer clothing help.
