What BMI Do You Need for Liposuction in London?
Most surgeons treat patients with a BMI under 30, but BMI is only part of the picture. Here is how eligibility is really assessed.

"Am I too heavy for surgery?" is one of the most common questions we hear. The short answer: most clinics offering liposuction in London prefer a BMI below 30, but the number alone never decides your suitability.
The General BMI Guideline
- BMI under 25 — ideal. Fat is usually localised and skin quality is good.
- BMI 25–30 — very commonly treated. Excellent results are routine.
- BMI 30–35 — case by case. Often suitable for a single area under local anaesthetic, with realistic expectations.
- BMI over 35 — generally advised to lose weight first. Surgical risk rises and results are less predictable.
Why BMI Is an Imperfect Measure
BMI ignores muscle mass and fat distribution. A muscular patient can have a BMI of 31 with very little body fat, while another at 27 may carry stubborn, diet-resistant deposits that respond beautifully to surgery. What we actually assess is:
- Fat distribution. Subcutaneous fat can be removed; visceral fat around the organs cannot.
- Skin elasticity. Good elasticity allows the skin to retract smoothly.
- Weight stability. Three to six months at a steady weight predicts a lasting result.
- General health. Blood pressure, diabetes control, smoking status and medication.
Liposuction Is Not Weight Loss
This deserves repeating. Liposuction is a contouring procedure. Typical volumes removed correspond to a few kilograms at most; the change you see in the mirror comes from shape, not the scales. Patients who understand this are consistently the happiest with their outcome.
If Your BMI Is Too High Right Now
That is not a permanent no. Many of our patients lose 5–10% of their body weight first and then return. Losing weight before surgery also improves skin retraction and reduces anaesthetic risk. Medical weight management, including GLP-1 medication, can be part of that plan.
What Happens at Your Assessment
At your liposuction consultation in London we measure height, weight and body composition, examine the areas you want treated, pinch-test skin quality and review your medical history. You will leave knowing whether you are a candidate now, or what to change first — and you will never be pressured into surgery that will not serve you.
