Flying After Liposuction in London: When Is It Safe to Travel?
How long to wait before flying after liposuction, DVT risk, garment rules and practical tips for short-haul and long-haul travel.
Many of our patients travel to us from outside the capital or from abroad, so travel planning is a routine part of liposuction recovery in London. Flying too soon carries real risks — here is a clear, practical timeline.
The Short Answer
- Short-haul (under 4 hours): usually safe after 7 days, with clearance from your surgeon.
- Long-haul (over 4 hours): wait 10–14 days minimum; some surgeons prefer three weeks after extensive or 360 procedures.
- Never fly within the first 48–72 hours. This is when swelling peaks and complications are most likely to appear.
Always get individual clearance at your post-operative review before booking a non-refundable ticket.
Why Waiting Matters
DVT risk. Surgery and immobility both increase clotting risk. Combining them within days of a procedure compounds that risk.
Swelling. Cabin pressure and prolonged sitting worsen fluid retention, particularly in the abdomen, flanks and thighs.
Access to care. If a seroma, infection or bleeding occurs, you want to be near the team who operated on you, not in another country.
Insurance. Most travel policies exclude complications arising from recent elective surgery. Check the wording carefully.
Flying Safely Once You Are Cleared
- Wear your compression garment for the entire journey, plus flight socks.
- Walk the cabin every hour and do ankle circles while seated.
- Stay well hydrated and avoid alcohol.
- Book an aisle seat and, if you can, extra legroom.
- Carry a letter from your surgeon and your medication in hand luggage.
- Never lift heavy suitcases — arrange assistance or luggage handling.
Travelling to London for Surgery
